Artist's Statment

Cary Brown's latest works which will be exhibited at the University of Virginia Art Museum from April 21 - June 3, 2007 are a unique but successful combination of polaroid emulsion lifts and painting, drawing and poetry.  She writes:

"I began to draw at an early age with one of my grandmothers who is a painter and a naturalist so our subjects were often things from the woods and on the farm. Later, I studied art at UVa and then at the New York Academy of Art. When my husband and I moved back to Charlottesville in 1993, I was delighted to return to nature. Having facility with photography, I was drawn to that medium again when contemplating reality.  I was captivated by the glimmering light of Charlottesville, especially in the Spring. My work seeks to explore, question and witness the spirit in  objects-- the light, the love, the energy, the beauty, the magic. In essence, the truth as it speaks to me."
